ADSU ACCOMMODATION SCANDAL: ATROCITY THAT WILL HARDLY BE FORGOTTEN

The fraud, deceit and irregularities surrounding the hostel accommodation has continue to remain the talk of the campus since school resumption. Off hyperbole, the corruption characterised by nepotism and bribery that seems to eat deep into the body fabric of the accommodation process of the institution is good enough for the management to carve a new GST course out of it and to be studied as SCAM 101 by all students.

I am now feeling tempted to believe in the sarcastic work of George Orwell when he wrote in his famous novel, ‘Animal Farm’ that ’all animals are equal but some are more equal than others’. In this case, the weaker ones are left with no option than to patronize the business of the hyenas and jackals to get sleeping space in the kingdom. This is a clear case of life, paradox and everything in-between.

A snapshot into trend of how registration of continue students commences, it could be vividly remember that all returning students have undoubtedly seen accommodation reservation in their portal irrespective of their level but network was epileptic. Those who were fortunate to access the portal to pay their accommodation fee that day got accommodation fairly, but 24 hours later, hostel reservation disappeared miraculously from everybody’s portal and that is how monkey business sets in. Since that day, criteria for getting bed space becomes connection with high and higher forces who preach against corruption in the day and practice it in the night.

Above everything, the shocker that sent a shiver down the spine of most students is how students with boyfriends and uncles in the school are getting 5-6 bed spaces at the detriment of those without connection. Ladies with connections with either ICT or Senate have turned hostel deal into business. They will comfortably take the ID numbers of their friends to ICT, time will be given to them, and boom reservation will appear for them to claim it. Nobody should ask me for any evidence. This is an open secret that doesn’t requires any investigation to track it.

While students are still crying foul over the deepening silence of SUG regarding hostel malpractice which ordinarily is their primary duty to curtail, they were greeted with another blunder from SUG secretariat. The barking and posing empty threats on students who are involved in hostel buying and selling by SUG is not only a comedy of error, but has also exposed the leadership of the union to be colossal failure.

If SUG dire swear that the leadership of the union is not in the picture of the smelly corruption taking place in ICT regarding accommodation, thunder will strike the leadership down. The cowards who are posing as comrades they took off their eyes from the politics of accommodation brewing in ICT and decide to focus it exclusively on students.

I don’t want to believe the report reaching me that SUG leadership has betrayed the trust of students by following backyard to collect their share of accommodation at the detriment of students they represents. Could this be the reason why the union secretariat has been silent over this predicament of students? This is not unionism and this is not Aluta. This is a clear definition of COMbreads who are into ALOOTA.

With this harrowing development, if at all school management want accommodation to be shared evenly among students, the system should be customise in such a way that discretion of who get hostel and not shouldn’t be exclusively reserved to ICT. Certainly, this malpractice will continue as far as ICT staff can have access to portal to remove and put hostel reservation at wish.
