ADAMAWA STATE UNIVERSITY SHUT DOWN SUG, STATE AND TRIBAL ASSOCIATIONS AMIDST STUDENTS GROANING

 Mix reactions have continue to trail the decision of the management of Adamawa State University, Mubi of dissolving Students Union Government, State and tribal associations in the institution.

Though, according to the Memo released after the management’s meeting on the 29th April, 2021 no clear reason was given for dissolution of the union and the associations mentioned in the circular, but many students are linking the incident to the students’ protest which took place on the 18th of last month after security officer of the institution molest and bully student close to pre-medics boys hostel.

According to the circular, the management at its meeting held on the 28th April approved immediate dissolution of SUG/Arms, immediate dissolution of State/tribal Associations, immediate dissolutions of all social societies/associations and immediate stoppage of all forms of processions.

 Speaking with SUG Exco who pleaded for anonymity revealed that after students protest which took place in the late hours of the 18th March, the school management summoned the leadership of the union for cross examination after alleging that the union has a finger in the pie.

He expatiates further that the management of the union maintained her ground throughout the meeting that the union neither sponsor nor partake in the protest despite attempt by the management to indict the union. He laments that at some point, management of the institution threatened the union to either provide names of the protesting students or the body risk suspension even after confessing their ignorance of the protest as a union.

The Exco who confide in AdsuGist revealed that since after union’s meeting with the management, the leadership of the union was not summon again with exception of  stakeholders of the union whom were summon exclusively to answer some questions.

According to him, they were surprise to hear from grapevine that the management is set to suspend the union after her meeting of 28th April. He added that towards the evening of the 28th April, letter was served to the union inviting the principal officers of the union for an interaction with the management in a meeting schedule to hold by 11:00am of 29th April. 

He said that what sent a shiver down the spin of the union was the disposition of the management at the meeting. He said that the management invited them for a talk, but when they appeared, resolutions of the management was read to them and while they were trying to ask questions, they were denied fair hearing and the meeting was closed.

Critical look at how events unfold that led to the dissolution of the unions and associations of the institution, many students are feeling tempted to conclude that the management only hide behind the students protest to suspend SUG, which according to some, the management’s position is not silly and laughable but is also dictatorial.

Student close to SUG leadership who also pleaded for anonymity sarcastically mention that the management would have simply tell SUG that they have being looking for an excuse to nail the union to the cross and they want to capitalise on the issue of protest to oust the union instead of cutting corners and taking style.

He maintains that SUG for long has been a bone in the throat of the management and the union severally heard from unverified sources that the school management wants to dissolve the union but don’t know how to go about it.

A Comrade who also spoke with AdsuGist on the condition of anonymity said that what happened to SUG is not a coincidence, rather a well scripted conspiracy by the management of the institution, which according to him the management used PRESS CLUB as a Guinea pig for test running her conspiracy and now chose to launch her missiles on SUG after noticing that it works perfectly on Press Club.

According to some students, the management of the institution is after bringing down any voice that will counter the management’s decision in any way.

According to them, the management has now assume the position of Alfa and Omega, and students’ rights are now at the mercy of God and the management.

Speaking with some group of Comrades, they revealed that the leadership of NANS has already being informed about the predicament that befall SUG and while waiting for their reaction, they are working towards organizing a peaceful protest for students to register their grievance over thought provoking decision of the management.
